| Orientation | Looking southwest over the lights of Los Angeles from the Mount Wilson Observatory |
| Notes | The marine layer rolls in over the Los Angeles basin and begins to smother the lights of the metropolis. Overhead in the night sky as seen from the Mount Wilson Observatory are Jupiter, Venus and a crescent Moon engaged in a celestial gathering, slowly sinking toward the western horizon far off over the Pacific Ocean. This image was chosen as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day for 03 December 2008 and also featured on page 73 of Sky & Telescope's April 2009 Gallery section. |
